David Lange

1942–2005 · 20th century

David Lange was Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1984 to 1989, leading the Fourth Labour Government. His government banned nuclear-armed and nuclear-powered ships, causing a rift with the United States in the ANZUS alliance, while his finance minister Roger Douglas carried out sweeping free-market reforms. Lange broke with Douglas over the pace of change and resigned in 1989.
