David Komnenos

c. 1184–1212 · 13th century

David Komnenos was a grandson of the Byzantine emperor Andronikos I who, with his brother Alexios, seized Trebizond in April 1204 with Georgian troops provided by their kinswoman Queen Tamar. While Alexios ruled as the first emperor of Trebizond, David led campaigns westward along the Black Sea coast into Paphlagonia but lost ground to the Empire of Nicaea. He died as a monk in 1212.
