Black Sea

The Black Sea is an inland sea between southeastern Europe and Anatolia, connected to the Mediterranean through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles. It was a vital trade and strategic zone for the Byzantine Empire and the Khazar Khaganate, and the Ottoman Empire long controlled its shores. Russian expansion to the Black Sea coast in the eighteenth century was a major gain for the Russian Empire.
