Constantinople

Constantinople, now Istanbul, was the city on the Bosphorus refounded by Constantine I in the fourth century CE on the site of Byzantion. It was the capital of the Byzantine Empire for over a thousand years and one of the largest and richest cities of the medieval world, besieged by the Umayyads and others. It fell to the Ottomans in 1453 and became the capital of the Ottoman Empire.
