Bosphorus

The Bosphorus is a narrow strait in northwestern Turkey connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and separating Europe from Asia. Constantinople stood on its European shore, controlling traffic between the two seas. This strategic position underlay the foundation and long survival of the Byzantine Empire's capital.
