Greeks

The Greeks are a people of the eastern Mediterranean whose language and culture spread widely through colonisation, trade and conquest. They feature in the histories of many empires: as adversaries of the Achaemenid Empire and the Punic Empire, as the ruling elite of the Macedonian, Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires, and as the core population of the Byzantine Empire. Greek learning was later translated and preserved under the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates.
