Proto-kingdom of Naqada

3500 BCE – 3200 BCE (approx.) · capital Nubt

A predynastic chiefdom centred on Nubt in Upper Egypt, one of the early power centres whose rivalries led to the unification of Egypt.

Origins

Nubt, the Ombos of the Greeks, grew on the west bank of the Nile near modern Naqada during the Naqada I and II phases of the 4th millennium BCE. Its position opposite the Wadi Hammamat, the route to the gold-bearing Eastern Desert, brought wealth, and by c. 3500 BCE a walled town and rich graves show a ruling elite taking shape.

Rule and society

No written records survive, so almost everything is inferred from archaeology. Cemetery T at Naqada held large brick-lined tombs furnished with fine pottery, stone vessels, maceheads and imported goods, pointing to a hereditary chiefly class. Nubt was the cult centre of the god Set, later called 'the Ombite', and its workshops produced painted pottery traded along the Nile.

Decline and legacy

By c. 3200 BCE Nubt appears to have been eclipsed by, or absorbed into, the Proto-kingdom of Thinis, which went on to unite Egypt. The town survived as a temple centre of Set, and the Naqada culture gave its name to the whole predynastic period.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
