Wadi Hammamat
Wadi Hammamat is a dry valley in Egypt's Eastern Desert, on the route from Coptos on the Nile to the Red Sea coast. From predynastic times it was a route to gold mines and the Red Sea, and its quarries supplied the dark greywacke prized for statues and sarcophagi. Hundreds of rock inscriptions record royal quarrying expeditions, especially of the Middle Kingdom.
