Coptos
Coptos, modern Qift, was an ancient Egyptian city on the east bank of the Nile north of Thebes. It was the starting point of desert routes through the Wadi Hammamat to the Red Sea and to stone quarries and gold mines, and the cult centre of the fertility god Min. Royal decrees of the late Old Kingdom found there record privileges granted to its temple and to powerful local officials.
