Thebes
Thebes was an ancient city in Upper Egypt on the Nile, the site of present-day Luxor. It was the religious centre of the god Amun, with the great temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor, and the nearby Valley of the Kings held New Kingdom royal tombs. Accounts of the Egyptian Empire New Kingdom describe how, by around 1100 BCE, the High Priests of Amun governed Upper Egypt as virtually independent rulers.
