Upper Egypt
Upper Egypt is the southern part of Egypt, the narrow Nile Valley stretching from around Memphis southwards to the First Cataract at Aswan. It was home to Thebes, the religious centre of the New Kingdom. By around 1100 BCE the High Priests of Amun governed Upper Egypt as virtually independent rulers, and the region later came under the control of the Kushite kings of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty.
