Upper Burma
Upper Burma is the inland, northern part of Myanmar around the middle Irrawaddy, including the dry zone where Pagan, Ava and Mandalay stood. It was the heartland of most Burmese kingdoms, in contrast to the Mon country of Lower Burma. Britain annexed it after the Third Anglo-Burmese War in 1885, together with the Shan states.
