Lower Burma
Lower Burma is the southern, coastal part of Myanmar, centred on the Irrawaddy delta and the cities of Pegu and Rangoon. It was long the land of Mon kingdoms such as Hanthawaddy, often at war with the Burman rulers of Upper Burma. Britain annexed it in the Second Anglo-Burmese War of 1852, and under British rule the delta was cleared for rice, becoming one of the world's leading rice-exporting regions.
