Institution
Pharaoh
Pharaoh is the modern title for the kings of ancient Egypt, regarded as divine rulers responsible for maintaining cosmic order. The institution reached the height of its power in the Egyptian New Kingdom. Foreign rulers, including the Kushite kings, the Persian kings of the Achaemenid Empire and the Ptolemaic dynasty, adopted pharaonic titles and imagery to legitimise their rule over Egypt.
