Vassal
A vassal is a ruler or lord who holds power or land in subordination to a superior, owing loyalty, tribute or military service in return for protection or recognition. Vassalage was a widespread means of extending imperial authority without direct administration. It underpinned the structure of the Hittite Empire and the Mitanni Empire, and the Majapahit Empire ruled much of the Indonesian archipelago through vassal relationships.
