Anatolia

Also known as Anatolian

Anatolia, or Asia Minor, is the large peninsula forming most of present-day Turkey, between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. It was the heartland of the Hittite Empire and was later ruled or contested by the Achaemenid, Seleucid and Byzantine empires. After the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 Turkish groups settled it under the Seljuks, and it became the base of the Ottoman Empire.
