Syria

Also known as Syrian

Syria is a historical region of the eastern Mediterranean, lying between Anatolia, Mesopotamia, Arabia and Egypt. Its cities, trade routes and fertile lands made it one of the most contested regions in history, fought over by the Hittite, Egyptian, Assyrian, Seleucid, Ptolemaic, Roman and Byzantine powers. In the Islamic period it was the heartland of the Umayyad Caliphate, with its capital at Damascus, and later a core territory of the Ayyubid and Mamluk states.
