Syr Darya
The Syr Darya is a major river of Central Asia that flows from the Tian Shan mountains north-westwards to the Aral Sea. Known to classical writers as the Jaxartes, it marked an important frontier between the settled lands of Transoxiana and the steppe. The Second Turkic Khaganate under Qapaghan extended its influence as far as the Syr Darya in the early eighth century.
