Turkistan

Also known as Yasi, Hazrat-e Turkestan

Turkistan is a city in southern Kazakhstan, near the Syr Darya, known in the Middle Ages as Yasi. It grew around the shrine of the Sufi Ahmad Yasawi, whose mausoleum was built by Timur. From the late 16th century it was a political and spiritual centre of the Kazakh Khanate, where many khans were buried.
