Abulkhair Khan

1693–1748 · 18th century

Abulkhair Khan was khan of the Junior Juz, the western Kazakh horde, from about 1718. Under pressure from the Dzungars and the Kalmyk Khanate he sought Russian protection, formalised in 1731, the first step in Russia's absorption of the Kazakh steppe. Russia built Orenburg on his frontier in 1743, and he was killed in 1748 in a feud with a sultan of the Middle Juz.
