Tashkent
Tashkent is the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan, in an oasis watered by the Chirchiq river. Known in the early Middle Ages as Chach or Shash, it was a trading city between the farmland of Transoxiana and the steppe. Taken by Russia in 1865, it became the capital of Russian Turkestan and then of the Uzbek SSR from 1930. After an earthquake in 1966 much of the city was rebuilt.
