c. 840–1212 · 9th century · Also known as Qarakhanids, Karakhanids, Qarakhanid Khanate, Kara-Khanids

The Kara-Khanid Khanate was a Turkic dynasty that ruled Central Asia from about the ninth century until 1212, the first Turkic dynasty to convert to Islam in the tenth century. In 999 it took Bukhara and ended the Samanid state, dividing Transoxiana with the Ghaznavids. Later split into eastern and western khanates, it became a vassal of the Seljuks and the Qara Khitai before falling to the Khwarazmshahs.
