Kashgar

Also known as Kashi

Kashgar is an oasis city in the far west of Xinjiang, China, near the borders of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, where Silk Road routes across the Pamirs met those around the Tarim Basin. For centuries a centre of Uyghur Muslim culture and trade, it was ruled by the Karakhanids, the Chagatai khans and the Khoja leaders, paid tribute to the Dzungars from 1680 and was conquered by the Qing in 1759.
