Tarim Basin
The Tarim Basin is a large desert basin in Central Asia, in present-day Xinjiang, ringed by oasis cities that served as key stations on the Silk Road. Control of these oases was repeatedly contested by Chinese, steppe and Central Asian powers. The Han and Tang dynasties both projected military power into the basin, and it later formed part of the eastern domains of the Chagatai Empire.
