Aral Sea
The Aral Sea is a large inland lake in Central Asia, between present-day Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, fed by the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers. The steppe lands around it marked the northern fringes of the Achaemenid world. The Oghuz Turks who founded the Seljuk Empire originated in the region near the lower Syr Darya and the Aral Sea.
