Thebes, Greece
Thebes was the leading city of Boeotia in central Greece and the dominant member of the Boeotian League. It sided with Persia during the invasion of 480–479 BCE, but under Epaminondas and Pelopidas it defeated Sparta at Leuctra in 371 BCE and briefly became the strongest power in Greece. Alexander the Great destroyed the city in 335 BCE after it revolted.
