Epaminondas

c. 418–362 BCE · 4th century BCE

Epaminondas was a Theban general and statesman who, with Pelopidas, made Thebes the leading power of Greece. His deep, left-weighted phalanx defeated Sparta at Leuctra in 371 BCE. He then invaded the Peloponnese, freed Messenia from Spartan rule and backed the founding of Messene and Megalopolis. He was killed at the Battle of Mantinea in 362 BCE, and Theban supremacy faded soon after.
