Red Sea
The Red Sea is a narrow arm of the Indian Ocean between north-east Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, connected to the Mediterranean by the Suez isthmus. It has long been a major trade route between the Mediterranean, Arabia, India and East Africa. Control of its trade enriched the Aksumite Empire, the Fatimid Caliphate and the Mamluk Sultanate, and it linked the Roman Empire to India.
