Edward the Confessor

c. 1003–1066 · 11th century

Edward the Confessor was king of the English from 1042 to 1066, the son of Æthelred the Unready and Emma of Normandy. Raised in exile in Normandy during the Danish rule of Cnut and his sons, he succeeded his half-brother Harthacnut. He built the first great Westminster Abbey and was later canonised. His death without children led to the Norman Conquest, as both Harold Godwinson and William of Normandy claimed the throne.
