Edward the Elder

c. 874–924 · 10th century

Edward the Elder was King of the Anglo-Saxons from 899 to 924, son of Alfred the Great. With his sister Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, he conquered the Danish-held lands of the southern Danelaw, taking East Anglia and the Five Boroughs in 917–918, and built fortified burhs. His conquests prepared the unification of England under his son Æthelstan.
