    Jacques Cartier left Brittany on the first of three voyages that explored the Gulf of St Lawrence. His expeditions laid the basis for France's later claim to Canada.

    Jacques Cartier plants a cross at Gaspé and claims it for France

    Jacques Cartier raised a nine-metre wooden cross at Gaspé Bay bearing the arms of the King of France. The gesture began French claims to the St Lawrence region that became New France.

    Ignatius of Loyola and companions take vows at Montmartre

    Ignatius and six companions vowed poverty and chastity in a chapel on Montmartre in Paris. The group became the Society of Jesus, approved by the Pope in 1540.

    Spanish conquistadors found San Francisco de Quito

    Sebastián de Benalcázar's men founded the Spanish city of Quito on the site of an Inca centre in the Andes. Its historic centre is today one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the Americas.

    The Diet of Treptow was an assembly of the Pomeranian estates held at Treptow an der Rega (Trzebiatów) in December 1534, at which Dukes Barnim IX and Philip I introduced the Lutheran Reformation in Pomerania.

    The Battle of Surajgarh was fought in 1534 near Surajgarha on the Kiul river in Bihar, India, between the Afghan leader Sher Khan Sur and the army of Ghiyasuddin Mahmud Shah, sultan of Bengal, allied with the Lohani rulers of Bihar.
