Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam

1464–1534 · 16th century

Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam was Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller from 1521. He led the defence of Rhodes against Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522 and, after its surrender, the Order's years of wandering. In 1530 he accepted Malta, Gozo and Tripoli from Charles V and settled the Order at Birgu.
