Philippeville massacre
The Philippeville massacre took place on 20 August 1955 in and around Philippeville, now Skikda, in north-eastern Algeria. FLN fighters and armed villagers attacked Europeans and pro-French Muslims, killing over a hundred, including women and children at the mining village of El Halia. French reprisals killed thousands of Muslim Algerians, deepening the divide between the communities and escalating the war.
