National Liberation Front (Greece)

1941–1944 · 20th century · Also known as EAM

The National Liberation Front (EAM) was the largest Greek resistance movement during the Axis occupation, founded in September 1941 under the leadership of the Communist Party of Greece. Its army, ELAS, controlled much of the mountainous interior by 1944. Its conflict with the British-backed government led to fighting in Athens in December 1944 and later to the Greek Civil War.
