Algeria
Algeria is a country in north-western Africa between the Mediterranean and the Sahara. Its territory formed part of medieval empires such as the Almoravid domains and was later an Ottoman province governed from Algiers. France conquered it from 1830, making it the most important settler colony of the French Empire, until independence in 1962.
