Kel Ajjer
Origins
The Kel Ajjer emerged as a distinct confederation of the eastern Tuareg, occupying the Tassili n'Ajjer plateau and the oases of Ghat and Djanet in present-day south-eastern Algeria and south-western Libya. Their organisation took shape by the 17th century.
Rule and society
The confederation was led by an amenokal from a noble lineage, presiding over noble warriors, vassal herders and dependent oasis farmers. Ghat was a key stop on the caravan route from Tripoli to Kano, and the Kel Ajjer taxed and protected caravans. They fought a long war with the Kel Ahaggar in the 1870s.
Decline and legacy
The Ottomans garrisoned Ghat from 1875, and later Italian Libya claimed it, while France took Djanet in 1911. Many Kel Ajjer joined the Senussi Order's revolt against the French in 1916, which was suppressed, dividing the confederation between French and Italian rule.
