French colonial empire
The French colonial empire comprised the overseas territories ruled by France. The first empire, built from the seventeenth century in North America, the Caribbean and India, was largely lost by 1815; the second, built from the conquest of Algeria in 1830, covered large parts of Africa and Indochina before decolonisation after the Second World War.
