Greek People's Liberation Army

1942–1945 · 20th century · Also known as ELAS

The Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS) was the military wing of EAM and the largest Greek resistance force during the Axis occupation. Formed in 1942, with Aris Velouchiotis as its leading figure and Stefanos Sarafis as military commander, it fought the occupiers and rival resistance groups. After clashes with British and government forces in Athens in December 1944, it was disbanded under the Varkiza Agreement of February 1945.
