Jacques Massu

1908–2002 · 20th century

Jacques Massu (1908–2002) was a French general who had served with the Free French in the Second World War. Commanding the 10th Parachute Division, he was given police powers in Algiers in 1957 and broke the FLN network in the Battle of Algiers through mass arrests and torture. His role in the crisis of May 1958 helped bring Charles de Gaulle back to power, but his criticism of de Gaulle's Algerian policy led to his recall in 1960.
