Battle of Algiers

1956–1957 · 20th century · Part of the Algerian War

The Battle of Algiers was the campaign of 1956–1957 in which the FLN waged a bombing and assassination offensive in Algiers and French paratroopers under General Jacques Massu broke its network in the city. Massu's troops relied on mass arrests and the systematic use of torture, and thousands of detainees disappeared. The French won militarily, but their methods discredited the war in France and abroad.
