    Euro notes and coins enter circulation

    Euro banknotes and coins went into circulation in twelve countries, the largest currency changeover in history. Within two months the franc, mark, lira, peseta and other national currencies had ceased to be legal tender.

  2. 12 October

    Bombings in Bali kill 202 people

    Militants of Jemaah Islamiyah bombed two nightclubs in the tourist district of Kuta, Bali, killing 202 people from 21 countries. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Indonesia's history.

  3. 26 October

    Russian forces end the Moscow theatre siege with gas

    Special forces pumped an incapacitating chemical into a Moscow theatre where Chechen militants held some 850 hostages. The attackers were killed, but about 130 hostages died, mostly from the gas's effects.
