Pierre Werner

1913–2002 · 20th century

Pierre Werner was a Luxembourg Christian Social politician who served as prime minister from 1959 to 1974 and again from 1979 to 1984. In 1970 he chaired the group that produced the Werner Report, the first plan for economic and monetary union in the European Communities, which is why he is often called a father of the euro. His long tenure saw the diversification of Luxembourg's economy into banking and services.
