Belgium
Belgium is a country in northwestern Europe that became independent in 1830 and acquired a large colonial empire in Central Africa. King Leopold II's Congo Free State absorbed the territories of the Luba and Lunda states from the 1890s, and the region passed to Belgian state rule in 1908. Belgian colonial rule ended the autonomy of the Luba Empire and Lunda Empire, whose rulers became client chiefs.
