Belgium–Luxembourg Economic Union

1921 · 20th century · Also known as BLEU

The Belgium–Luxembourg Economic Union is a customs and monetary union created by a treaty signed in 1921, after Luxembourg had left the German Zollverein. It abolished customs barriers between the two countries and tied the Luxembourg franc to the Belgian franc, an arrangement that lasted until both adopted the euro. The union later became part of the wider Benelux Economic Union with the Netherlands.
