Belgorod Line

1635–1658 · 17th century

The Belgorod Line was a fortified defensive line built by Muscovy in 1635–1658 along its southern steppe frontier against Crimean and Nogai Tatar raids. Running some 800 km from the Vorskla to the Tambov area, with Belgorod as its centre, it combined towns, forts, earthen ramparts and abatis. It pushed the frontier south and opened the forest-steppe to Russian settlement.
