Battle of Konotop

1659 · 17th century · Part of the Russo-Polish War (1654–1667)

The Battle of Konotop was fought in the summer of 1659 near Konotop in Ukraine, during the Russo-Polish War. The Cossack hetman Ivan Vyhovsky, allied with the Crimean khan Mehmed IV Giray, defeated a Muscovite army besieging the town under Prince Aleksey Trubetskoy, destroying much of its cavalry. The victory did not save Vyhovsky, who was overthrown later that year.
