Cossacks
The Cossacks were self-governing communities of warriors in the steppe borderlands of Ukraine and southern Russia. In the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the uprising led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky from 1648 caused catastrophic losses. In the Russian Empire, Cossack hosts served as frontier troops and played a major part in expansion into Siberia.
