Cossack Hetmanate

1648–1764 · 17th century

The Cossack Hetmanate was the state of the Zaporozhian Cossacks in central Ukraine, founded during Bohdan Khmelnytsky's uprising against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1648. By the Pereiaslav agreement of 1654 it came under the protection of the Russian tsar, and after the Truce of Andrusovo of 1667 it survived as an autonomous left-bank state with its own hetman, courts and regiments. Catherine II abolished the office of hetman in 1764 and its remaining institutions by 1781.
