Pereiaslav

Also known as Pereyaslav, Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi

Pereiaslav is a town in Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine, south-east of Kyiv near the Dnieper. As Pereyaslavl it was one of the chief towns of Kievan Rus' and the seat of a principality guarding the steppe frontier, until the Mongols sacked it in 1239. In 1654 the Cossack council held there under Bohdan Khmelnytsky accepted the protection of the Russian tsar. It was called Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi from 1943 to 2019.
