Perekop
Perekop is a village on the narrow isthmus that joins the Crimean peninsula to the mainland, and the name of the isthmus itself. A fortress the Crimean Tatars called Or Qapı stood there behind an ancient ditch and rampart across the isthmus, guarding Crimea's only land approach. Russian armies stormed the Perekop lines in 1736 and 1771, and the Red Army broke through there in 1920.
